[net.ham-radio] Query: RTTY and AMTOR units

halbert@ucbvax.UUCP (Dan Halbert) (04/08/84)

I'm interested in getting an RTTY unit, preferably with AMTOR capability.
The prices of the commercial units vary wildly, and I have no clue as to
the quality differences. I have a fine RFI-free computer terminal, but would
rather not buy a cheap computer (VIC-20, etc.), so the software/modem
combos are not what I want. I'm interested in a variety of speeds and shifts,
so I can listen to commercial RTTY as well.

Any advice? Are there big differences in modem quality? Some AMTOR units
supposedly implement only a subset of AMTOR modes; which ones would I be
missing? The new Kantronics "Universal Terminal Unit" seems inexpensive,
and perhaps well suited to what I want, but their ads contain little
information, and the local store has none yet.

I will summarize any info I get in another message. Thanks.
