x NABER INITIATES TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION PROGRAM, CURRENT FCC LICENSE HOLDERS TO BE GRANDFATHERED This information from the National Association of Business and Educational Radio (NABER) will be of interest to holders of FCC Commercial Radiotelephone Operators Licenses: "The FCC voted in its February 24, 1984, meeting to eliminate the license requirement for technicians installing, repairing, and maintaining radio transmit- ters in the Private Land Mobile, Fixed, and Personal Radio Services (General Docket 83-322). The FCC's Field Operations Bureau, however, did state that the Commission now 'strongly endorses and encourages' the establishment of a program or programs to ensure that maintenance, installation, and repair are performed only by certified technicians." "....This is why NABER has developed a Technician Cer- tification Program." "....NABER is presently offering an Exemption Program for Charter Participants which will allow those persons who currently hold a valid General Radiotelephone Operator, First-Class, or Second-Class License to be 'grandfathered' into the NABER Technician Certification Program with a waiver of the examination requirement. The deadline for the Exemption Program is Aril 30, 1983...." (now July 30, 1984 - bp.) There is a $10 fee, which will help to cover the certificate printing (with a calligraphied name) and verification card. More information and an application form are available from: NABER 1330 New Hampshire Ave. NW P.O. Box 19164 Washington, DC 20036 tel (202)887-0920 I'm not endorsing this program, but I mailed in my check for $10 today. -- ========================================================================== Bob Parnass, AT&T Bell Laboratories - ihnp4!ihuxf!parnass - (312)979-5760
