[comp.unix.admin] Admin to User Ratio Help

fpb@ittc.wec.com (Frank P. Bresz) (04/16/91)

Hi There,

I am in the process of justifying our existence sort of. What I
need from the net is a summary of admin/support personnel to user ratios.
Currently we have myself: I am a software engineer with 7 years exp, and 2
software/hardware technicians with about 10 years each. We run a mixed
Sun, PC, and Encore/Gould network running TCP/IP and XNS.

Currently we have about 75 - 80 Sun Workstations for which we are
directly responsible and another 20 - 30 which we are the fallback if they
crap out and noone else is around.

We also have about 135 PC's of various shapes, sizes and power
running on 3COM+ via Enet. Of these 135 about 30 have either PC-NFS from
Sun or PCS/TCP a package from 3COM to support TCP/IP.

We currently have 1 big server 4/490 w/4 1.2G IPI disks. 2 other
servers: a 3/280 and a 4/65.

Several of the machines are in public areas thereby running the
total 'USER' population up to about 300.

As a team we are responsible for loading all software 3rd party and
P.D on the machines for which we have primary responsibility. Included of
course, is understanding how it all works and helping users with any
questions they may have.

We also have primary control over what we call 'the building
yellow', noone is supposed to touch yellow trunk cable without us knowing
about it.

Is it just me or does this seem like a lot to do for just 3. I
know there were some surveys about population/support and was wondering
what everyone out there thought.

Pointers to articles are of some help. I only have mail but I can
use the BITFTP mail server. If there are some small articles out there
just email them to me. (Check first before I get inundated with the same
thing over and over).

	Thank in Advance.
