[net.ham-radio] Question on Cooks and DXCC

4391aas@hou2f.UUCP (A.SCHWARZ) (04/17/84)

I have cards from the Cooks but don't
know if it's North or South; for the purpose of DXCC. I
think Manihiki is North and Raratonga is South, but am not
sure. Can anybody set me straight on this??

Al,
You are correct. Manihiki (also Penhryn or Tongareva- two names for
another island in the North Cooks) counts as North Cooks. Rarotonga and
a number of small islands near it count as South Cooks. Recently, ZK1XL
operated for an extended period from Penhryn. Also, ZK1MA can sometimes
be found at Manihiki, but he normally resides in the South Cooks. An
active station from the South Cooks is Victor, ZK1CG. Hope this helps.
