[comp.unix.admin] Compatability between processors

My question is will any machine with /bin/i386 compile and run the same
binaries as another machine with the file. Does the file /dynix (for example)
have any bearing on this?

Yes, it probably does; machines with a "/dynix" file may well not run
the same binaries as machines with a "/vmunix" file (Sun386i's, for
example), and they may not run the same binaries as machines with what I
assume is a "/unix" file (System V/386), either (SunOS on the 386i won't
run System V/386 binaries, and System V/386 won't run SunOS binaries; I
suspect Dynix won't run either, although I assume Dynix/PTX or whatever
they call their System V port will run System V/386 binaries). (I think
SunOS on the 386i does have a "/usr/bin/i386" file.)
