I'm trying to figure out how the BIND resolver is supposed to work. Say I'm on a machine named sws3.ctd.ornl.gov and I have the following in my /etc/resolv.conf: domain ORNL.GOV domain CTD.ORNL.GOV nameserver 128.219.128.24 nameserver 128.219.8.5 Which of the following addresses will be resolved? FQDN ornl.gov: ornl ornl.gov FQDN foo.ornl.gov: foo foo.ornl foo.ornl.gov FQDN bar.ctd.ornl.gov: bar bar.ctd bar.ctd.ornl bar.ctd.ornl.gov FQDN baz.qux.ornl.gov: baz baz.qux baz.qux.ornl baz.qux.ornl.gov Do I need to exhaustively list the X.ornl.gov subdomains in my resolv.conf to be able to resolve all hosts by their unqualified hostname? Am I missing some way to get all .ornl.gov addresses resolved? I did RTFM, but didn't find anything on this subject. -- Dave Sill (de5@ornl.gov) It will be a great day when our schools have Martin Marietta Energy Systems all the money they need and the Air Force Workstation Support has to hold a bake sale to buy a new bomber.
