From: Ed Schwalenberg <ED @ MIT-MC> I have been seeing ads and brochures for this general-coverage digital receiver for a while now. It seems to be exactly what I want: something that my computer can turn on, tune, and record RTTY broadcasts with. However, all the dealers I have called say that they will get them a week from now- exactly what they said last week, and the week before that.... Has anyone out there seen one? Played with one? Know anything at all about it that isn't printed on the single-sheet handout? Thanks!

ED,I PURCHASED ONE IN LATE MARCH. UNFORTUNATELY IT HAD A PROBLEM RIGHT FROM THE START. AFTER 20 MINUTES OPERATION THE PLL CIRCUITS QUIT AND IT WILL NO LOMGER STAY ON FREQUENCY. IN FACT IT WAS SO BAD ONE HAS NO IDEA WHERE IT COULD BE ( AT LEASRT NOT WITHOUT TEST INSTRUMENTATION ). I HAD TO SENT IT BACK FOR WARRANTY REPAIR AND HAVE NOT SEEN IT BACK YET, SO CAN NOT REPORT FURTHER ON IT. PERHAPS I SHOULD HAVE PAID MORE ATTENTION TO THE COMMENTS ON THE R70 IN THE WORLD RADIO HANDBOOK !

Erickson Communications, in Chicago, had a USED R-71A for sale on April 7. I understand that the original owner goes through radios like a teenager through drugs. My ICOM R-70 works well, but is not the easiest rig to operate. The R-71A looks like a winner. -- ========================================================================== Bob Parnass, AT&T Bell Laboratories - ihnp4!ihuxf!parnass - (312)979-5414
