Folks, We have a network which needs to be backed up, and we have a server with a tape drive to do it. As we looked at software, we found a few mostly Berkeley-compatible network backup packages, costing in the thousands of $US. We also found a number of tar replacements, costing about US$100. We decided to look at the latter as a solution for backups. However, none of these that I have seen directly supports remote backups. They would all require shell scripts to control them. The development time required to demonstrate reliability could be large for this kind of system. It needs to be very dependable, as it will support developers and customers, who get *upset* when go away and never come back. Does andyone know of an inexpensive (okay, relatively inexpensive) system for doing network backups on SCO SysV boxes? Failing that, what are your favorite ways to do this? How do they handle down machines, or users with root who kill off your process on their box when they notice compiles slowing down? What about multiple tape volumes, and verification? And so forth... In short...Any ideas? Thanks, David Pipes ..!uunet!srg!spica!dpipes
