[comp.unix.sysv286] Compression on the Uport V/AT 286

fred@seer.uucp (Glen Collins) (11/04/90)

HI!

I would like to say just one thing about the compress problems
the buy is having. YOU CAN, I repeat YOU CAN uncompress 16 bit on the 286.
I will have to look into the core again, I but I successfully done it on
my machine. I can uncompress anything a 386 or bigger can compress. I
will get back to you when I find what I did.

Hmmm, I don't see why this subject keeps coming up. I don't use 286
Unix anymore, but I've been using 16 bit compress/uncompress on DOS for
years. The name of the program is comp16.arc/zip, and the source is
probably compsrc.arc/zip, both available at grape.ecs.clarkson.edu
(128.153.13.196). I believe the source code will compile on a Unix
system, too. I have compressed/uncompressed files of at least 2
megabytes on an AT with about 550K free memory.. No problem at all.
