A few weeks ago I asked the net about CD-ROM support for UNIX on PC's. I received the following responses. Thank you guys, for your help. -Marcel ============================================================================ From: Doug Pintar <dougp@ico.isc.com> Interactive Systems Corp., Boulder CO I just finished modifying the ISC HPDD Adaptec 1540 SCSI driver to support removable media, CD-ROM in particular. Theoretically, we have filesystem support for (at least) High Sierra and possibly ISO 9660-1988 as well. This should be out in an update release some time soon, but I have no idea when. ============================================================================ From: scum@virtech.uucp (Steven C. Monroe) Virtual Technologies Inc. I saw an summary of a press release in the new products section of the December 1990 edition of Unix World on page 164. A company call Micro Design International has designed a way for UNIX users to access DOS-based CD-ROMs with its SCSI Express Software. Says it supports High Sierra Group and ISO-9660 formats. Also supports disk, tape, DAT, WORM (and other optical media), etc. Available for SCO UNIX, Interactive, and AT&T's PC-based UNIX packages. $495 Micro Design International 6985 University Blvd. Winter Park, Florida 32792 (407)-677-8333 ============================================================================ From: james@anvil.co.uk (James ``Skinnyribs'' Dalby) Anvil Software Ltd Anvil Software Limited is a software development and consultancy organisation based in London, we have specialist experience with CDROM, having developed the first CDROM device drivers and file system support for CDROM under UNIX. We currently have access to CDROM under 386/ix on IBM compatible 386 PCs using an LMSI CM131 CD player, with a WD FASST card SCSI controller. This software is the property of Philips, we did the development work on their behalf. We are currently in negotiations with Philips to enable reselling of these products. Until we are in a position to resell this software, we are offering an independent devlopment service (reinventing the wheel) on a case by case basis. This is usually too expensive for small customers, of course, but large customers, who are not prepared to wait for the Philips release, have used us for this service. You can also get CDROM support on SUN SPARC stations running SUNOS4.0 or later. Part of the driver package is a CDROM interface which supposedly allows the CDROM to appear as a file system under Unix. I don't own a CDROM drive, so I don't know how well it works. ============================================================================ From me: IBM RS/6000 machines also have CD-ROM support for their manual pages. ######################################### # Marcel J.E.
