[comp.unix.sysv386] tar directory checksum errors

beser@tron.UUCP (Eric Beser) (09/17/90)

I am having errors on untarring files taken off the net. The tar
program reads, but then aborts with a directory checksum error.

I thought it was a bad transfer, but uncompress works ok, the
ftp was set on binary mode, I can cat the file, it seems like it
is on a huge (3 meg and higher) file that this happens on.

Because I am untarring from a file, I can't get the blocksize to
change.

Unless the files on the net are corrupted (?) this has happened with
the file epoch.tar.Z taken from sequent.kent.edu, the
epoch distribution file taken from cs.uiuc.edu. Is there a cockpit error
here? Anyone else had this problem. Could someone check the integrety of
the archive files on the net? Am I missing something?
