[net.ham-radio] Becoming a ham

karn@mouton.UUCP (05/25/84)

Perhaps the best way to find out about the subject if you're completely
new is to find an electronics or ham radio store. Many have books for
sale, including those sold by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL),
the primary US/Canadian ham organization. In particular, there are several
books which are written especially for the newcomer, containing license
study guides, etc.  You should also locate a local ham club;
many have ongoing license study classes and in any case is a good way to
meet hams in your area. Most hams are very helpful to newcomers and you
may very well find an "Elmer" (a ham term for an experienced amateur who
befriends a beginner.) If you wish, you can write the ARRL at
225 Main St., Newington, CT 06111. Good luck!
