[comp.unix.sysv386] ISC X11R3 v1.2 vs. C&T based VGA cards

dag@persoft.com (Daniel A. Glasser) (10/20/90)

Is there any chance that somebody out there (maybe even at ISC) has
developed an SVGA driver (or a patch to the SVGA driver stuff provided
with ISC X11r3 v1.2) which will allow 640x480x256, 800x600x16 and
1024x768x16 (and maybe even the 800x600x256) servers to be generated
for a Cardinal [56]00 VGA board (w/512k)? These cards use a Chips &
Technology VGA chip (I believe that Bocca also uses this chip) and have
the advantage that they refresh the display more quickly than the other
boards I've tried. None of the supported card entries in the xconfig
menus work for this card, so I'm stuck with 640x480x16.

I'm one of those people who are greatly disturbed by the pulsing of most
VGA boards, and I'm not talking about interlace jitter -- Fifteen minutes
in front of a Paradise VGA-16 (640x480x16) using MS-Windows 3.0 makes me
dizzy, nauseous and unable to think straight. It takes close to half an
hour when using the X server. Maybe it's my narcolepsy. I've tried two
different cards based on the TSENG 4000 chips, and they have the pulsing
problem, as does just about every other card I've tried.

We have ISC 2.2 w/X11r3 v1.2.
