[comp.unix.sysv386] Intel SYSV386 4.0 Upgrade

withrow@vino.enet.dec.com (Robert Withrow) (11/15/90)

To spare others the frustration I have gone through for the last
week, here is the information that you need to order the Intel
unix 4.0 upgrade.

  1) The part number is ``UNX40F5UPG''. The people at 1-800-INTEL4U
claim that this is a ``complete upgrade''. I specifically asked about
whether or not it includes the SDS and the networking stuff and
they said yes. The price is $400. It appears that this is non-discount-
able. (The above is for 5-1/4 floppies. The part number for 3 in.
floppies is ``UNX40F3UPG'' and for tape ((I dont know what kind)) is
``UNX40TPUPG''. I don't know the prices on these.)

  2) The part number for the documentation set (for the basic os) is
``UNX40PLATMN'' and the price is $150. The documentation for the
SDS is partnumber ``UNX40DEVMAN'' and the part number for for
XWindows is ``UNX40XPPDOC''. Whether the above software contains
XWindows I don't know. I don't know the prices for the latter two
documentation sets.

  3) You can order online documentation as ``UNX40OLDOC''. I don't
know the price for that either. It seems that there should be
a media code for this, but heck, what do I know?

  4) You have to find someone to sell these to you: Intel won't sell
to you unless you want a few thousand copies. Hamilton Avnet
is pretty much generally available (Get their number from
1-800-555-1212 and then ask them for a Hamilton Avnet location
near you.) I know that Programmers Connection *does not* sell
these (at least as recently as last friday). Arrow electronics
does not sell to end users.

  5) You can call 1-800-INTEL4U and ask for the ``fax package'' for the
upgrade program. I haven't seen what this contains yet.

  6) No one has asked to see my original v3.2 floppies yet. I don't know
what that means... I don't know if this is a so-called ``competitive upgrade''
or only for customers who have Intel SYSV386 r3.2 or what.

  7) If I find out any of the many things I said ``I don't know'' about above
I'll let you know!

  8) I asked the people at 1-800-INTEL4U if they minded if I posted this
information and they said ``Please do. That may reduce the number of
questions we have to answer''.
