I have a problem for which I expected to see a solution in the 'Frequently asked questions section' - but it wasn't there. I am attempting to run an Apple LaserWriter IINT off a serial line on a 386 running AT&T 386UNIX V3.2. When I set up the lp spooler option for the laserwriter the postscript data are sent (the little green light flashes merrily away) but the printer produces nothing. I then decided to ignore the OS and write a bit of code that sets the port characteristics and then forks. The child sends characters to the printer and the parent reads any feedback from the printer, i.e., error messages and EOT. When I use this code to write to the printer I get the same response as using lp and all characters returned from the printer are zero. I have used similar code under BSD4.3 and Microport 286 and it seems to work O.K. I have just been reading that other people have had some difficulty with modems . Should I be setting some getty or uugetty or some other process running? I should appreciate either some hints as to which sections of the manual I have not read closely enough OR Could somebody give me a concise set of instructions for this (apparently trivial) task. Thanks in advance. I would prefer replies by email, please.
