[comp.unix.sysv386] Once again, Roell's X386 server

karp-brad@CS.YALE.EDU (Brad Karp) (12/04/90)

Well, I've finally installed all of the binaries that Thomas Roell made
available, and configured my server in /usr/lib/X11/config/X386/Xconfig.
I used the "PVGA1A" and "640x480x256" lines in the file, and configured
my Logitech bus mouse (at Thomas' suggestion) as BusMouse "/dev/logi".

(My VGA card is the Pardise VGA 1024, and the card has 512K of memory. My
monitor is only a standard VGA analog monitor, so I want to set up the server
to use 640x480x256.)

When I typed "xinit" (I have ISC's X11R3 installed, so I already had a
.xinitrc in my home directory), the server successfully grabbed the next free
vt, and printed the gray crosshatch background. Then, when the pointer
appeared, (the X cursor), about eight pointers instead of one appeared (they
all move when I move the mouse; most bizarre) spaced evenly throughout my
screen. Also, after my default xterm, xload, xclock, and xbiff came up, I saw
that the screen was strangely scrambled; it appears as though part of the
screen is repeated "tiled" in an overlapping fashion on top of itself over
and over again, making for an unusable server.

Lastly, I noticed that the xclock run from my .xinitrc terminated with
a core dump (my console had a Memory fault -- core dumped message).

Can anyone suggest what I might do to correct any of the aforementioned
problems? Replies by email preferred; I will summarize.

Thanks.
