[comp.unix.sysv386] machine hangs when compiling files with lots of math in them

mike@vort.uucp (Mike Nemeth) (12/11/90)

i'm running ISC 3.2.0.2 on a IPC 386/25 (Cyrix math co-processor).

when attempting to compile a C program that uses a lot of floating
point math (ie. rung-kutta) the machine just hangs, dead-like-dinner,
push-the-red-button time.

using plain PCC, no life-on-the-edge code, nothing fancy.

it doesn't hang every time, maybe once out of three, and it doesn't
fail on just one file. i can't see anything strange with any of the
files, and lint thinks everything's copacetic.

although it doesn't always hang on the same file, it does always
hang in the "comp" pass of cc.

no problem when i'm trying to compile C programs that aren't
extremely math-oriented (ie. cnews, emacs, nethack, ...).

i'm extremely wierded out by this one. does/has this happen(ed) to
anybody else out there? any suggestions?

On the advice of council, I must respectfully decline to confirm any
of the above. Perhaps it was a glitch. Perhaps you are hallucinating.
