[comp.unix.sysv386] CD-rom in Unix

marcel@duteca (Marcel Mol) (11/29/90)

A friend of mine wants to use CD rom in his system. He knows that it works
on PC's, but he wants to use it in a Unix environment. Thewrefor he
wants to know if there are drivers and/or software that support
CD rom on Unix. If so, for which unix systems, and what hardware is needed
(he likes to use it on a SCSI controler).

HP support CD-ROM for on-line manuals on their UNIX system.

I saw an summary of a press release in the new products section of the
December 1990 edition of Unix World on page 164.

A company call Micro Design International has designed a way for UNIX users
to access DOS-based CD-ROMs with its SCSI Express Software. Says it supports
High Sierra Group and ISO-9660 formats. Also supports disk, tape, DAT,
WORM (and other optical media), etc. Available for SCO UNIX, Interactive,
and AT&T's PC-based UNIX packages. $495

	Micro Design International
	6985 University Blvd.
	Winter Park, Florida 32792
	(407)-677-8333

Hope this helps you out!

I haven't seen much in the way of discussion on this. I haven't seen
anyone mention the Western Digital 7000 FASST (SCSI) controller, which comes
with a driver from Columbia Software. Part of the driver package is
a CDROM interface which supposedly allows the CDROM to appear as a
file system under Unix. I don't own a CDROM drive, so I don't know
how well it works.
