[comp.unix.sysv386] Roell's X11R4 server on ESIX - HELP!!!

cccbiz@pebbles.ucdavis.edu (Kambiz Aghaiepour) (12/24/90)

I've been tearing my hair out for the last two hours or so, trying to
figure out how to get this X server configured for my SVGA/monitor
combination. If you're not interested in reading a lot of technical
details about this problem, hit your ``next article'' button now.

Here's what I've done:

Ran clock.exe (from clock.pas) and gotten the oscillator numbers for
the Trident SVGA card. The program came back with:

    Chipsets ET3000 ET4000
    clocks: 25.2 28.3 44.9 14.3"

As a result, I put the following line in the Xconfig file:

    ET4000 512 864 606 25 28 45 14 "800x600" # Trident SVGA

The second piece, getting the video timings right, is what has been
driving me batty. I've tried almost every possible combination of
numbers and am obviously doing something wrong. My latest try was:

    "800x600" 28 800 880 936 1016 600 606 610 631

This causes my screen to blank out and come up as an off-white.

The monitor that I'm using is a Panasonic PanaSync C1381.

It's Spec sheet says:

    Synchronization
        Horizontal: 30KHz to 37KHz continuous.
Auto size and center at 31.5KHz, 35.2KHz.
            VGA/SVGA/8514A standards.
        Vertical: 50Hz to 90Hz continuous.
            Non interlaced or interlaced modes.
Auto size and center for VGA/SVGA/8514A standards.

    Resolution
        Horizontal: 1024
        Vertical: 768

The VGA card DRAM contains 512K (which means that 800x600 is max
resolution on the server side, even though my monitor can do more).

I hope that someone out there can help me get this up and running
(Thomas??).

Thanks!!

The problem looks like the server doesn't know how to handle Trident chip.

Well, I have the very same problem. I can't configure the server for Trident SVGA card
(well, actually it's Everex ViewPoint card, 512K on-board RAM, with Trident TVGA (sic!)
chip). Is X386 supposed to support it? Is Trident compatible with ET3000/ET4000? (Of
course I tried to define both with zero success).

Is anybody writing driver for Trident? Does anybody have specs for that chip?

<Disclaimer> But of course!

P.S. Is anybody trying to get X11R4 running with TCP/IP support under ESIX?
I got it to compile, but the stuff doesn't run yet (:-). Oh, that !@#$
ESIX TCP/IP!! Was it really necessary to make it so incompatible with
     the civilized world?! (:-)
