[net.ham-radio] NASA TRACKING ANTENNA

I have returned from a trip to visit the Kennedy Space Center. During my
visit I saw several unusual things, one in particular was a tracking antenna.
The reason it caught my eye was that on a plaque in front of the display is
an explanation of how it was used at 148MHZ for to collect tracking information.
The thing that confuses me is that this display also calls this antenna a
UHF antenna. Has the UHF band always been defined as it is today?

I would also be interested in hearing a more detailed explanation of operation.
Did these tracking antennas just track the radio emissions from spacecraft?
Did these antenna systems operate duplex in two different bands?

The tour guides were unsure of what the correct response might be.
