[comp.unix.sysv386] Roell's server gives "Cannot establish any listening sockets"

mitchemt@silver.ucs.indiana.edu (Terry Mitchem) (01/14/91)

I still can't get Roell's server to work. It keeps giving the error:
	"Fata server bug!
	"cant establish any listening sockets"
What is this? I got it to shut up about /dev/ptmx and now I can't get rid
of this. What kind of sockets does this thing want? HELP! PLEASE! I'd love to
get this running. Later, Terry
.

Just read the docs that come with X386 (/usr/lib/X11/config/X386/Install):

...........

o you MUST have installed the STREAMS facility before you can use X11

o if you start X11 form the console - vt, there MUST be a free /dev/vt??

o check up that you have specified "SHLIBMAX 8" in /etc/conf/cf.d/stune.
(if not, this requires rebuilding the kernel)

o if you use xdm, xrdb or imake, you MUST have a /lib/cpp installed.

o imake may give you the warning "bad include syntax". This can be ignored.

o VPIX will only run with a version of X11R4 that support TCP/IP.

o you can only use 7bit chars with xterm when running not with TCP/IP.

..........

I think topic No.1 should fix your problem.

This is not true. I have found how to run VP/ix if the OS has TCP/ip
installed, even though the Server does not support TCP/ip connections.
(I assume you use csh).
	1) setenv TERM vt100 in a xterm
	2) rlogin local
	3) run vpix normally

You won't get graphics, or color, but you can do things like compile, dir,
pkzip, etc... Also, function keys do not work.

This works for ISC 2.2.
