Has anyone done up a side-by-side "scorecard" for the various 386 Unices? If so, might it be e-mailed to me? Thanks. -- UUCP: {rutgers|ames|uunet}!mimsy!woodb!fallst!tkevans INTERNET: tkevans%fallst@wb3ffv.ampr.org Tim Evans 2201 Brookhaven Ct, Fallston, MD 21047

I'm going to be talking about SysV/386 to the local UNIX Users Froup this week - and so I put together a matrix of vendors/bundlings/list prices. Maybe this would be some help. This matrix is still in the draft stage - I've got until Thursday to get things together. If anybody notices any glaring flaws or has any suggestions, please drop me a line. Before Thursday! BTW...can somebody fill in the AT&T and UHC info for me? I should have the Dell info filled in shortly. After all, the meeting is in Dell's facility. I think they'd tar & feather me if I snubbed them :-) I'm leaving off the vendor OEM'ed releases, such as Altos' stuff. Although Dell's 3.2 kind of fits into that catagory - I include them in the list for two reasons. First, their 4.0 breaks them out of that group. Second, I'm hoping very badly they go full out and support their stuff on other platforms. Their 4.0 has the potential to be a real kick-ass product. I don't know if this is the kind of information Tim requested, but here is the list: ============================================================================== Everex Unlim 2-User -------------------------------------------------------------- -------------- UNIX ESIX/V 386 695 399 DEV ESIX/V 386 Development - 595 STREAMS (included in UNIX) - - X11 (included in UNIX) - - NET (included in UNIX) - - NFS ESIX NFS for 386 Streams 525 - DOS --- - - DWB --- - - MAN ESIX/V 396 Manual Set 345 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ============================================================================== Intel - System V Release 3.2 Unlim 2-User -------------------------------------------------------------- -------------- UNIX UNIX System V 3.2 Platform 895 695 DEV System V Software Development Set 665 - STREAMS (included in UNIX) - - X11 X Window System 495 - NET TCP/IP for Intel UNIX V/386 495 - NFS NFS for Intel UNIX V/386 695 - DOS Merge/386 for Intel UNIX V/386 895 - DWB --- - - MAN (documentation included) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ============================================================================== Intel - System V Release 4.0 Unlim 2-User -------------------------------------------------------------- -------------- UNIX UNIX System V 4.0 1379 1119 DEV (included in UNIX) - - STREAMS (included in UNIX) - - X11 (included in UNIX) - - NET (included in UNIX) - - NFS (included in UNIX) - - DOS --- - - DWB --- - - MAN (documentation included) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ============================================================================== Interactive Systems Unlim 2-User -------------------------------------------------------------- -------------- UNIX 386/ix (System V/386 Release 3.2) 795 495 DEV 386/ix Software Development System 795 - STREAMS (included in UNIX) - - X11 386/ix Runtime - 295 NET 386/ix TCP 495 - NFS 386/ix NFS 495 - DOS 386/ix VP/ix 895 495 DWB 386/ix Text Workbench - 395 MAN (documentation included) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Application Platform (UNIX,DOS,`TEN/PLUS') 1795 795 *Application Developer (UNIX,DEV,DOS,DWB,`TEN/PLUS') 2695 1695 *Workstation Developer (UNIX,DEV,X11,NET,NFS,DOS,`X11.3 Dev') 2995 1995 ============================================================================== Microport Unlim 2-User -------------------------------------------------------------- -------------- UNIX SystemV/386 (System V/386 Release 3.2) 359 279 DEV SystemV/386 Software Development System 598 - STREAMS (included in UNIX) - - X11 --- - - NET SystemV/386 Net Services 299 - NFS --- - - DOS DOS Merge/386 549 399 DWB SystemV/386 Text Prep Sys 249 - MAN (documentation included) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ *SystemV/386 Complete 899 ============================================================================== Santa Cruz Operation - System V Release 3.2 Unlim 2-User -------------------------------------------------------------- -------------- UNIX SCO System V/386 Operating System 895 595 DEV SCO System V/386 Development System 995 - STREAMS (included in UNIX) - - X11 SCO Xsight Runtime System 395 - NET SCO TCP/IP Runtime System 595 - NFS SCO NFS 595 - DOS SCO VP/ix 895 495 DWB --- - - MAN (documentation included) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Open Desktop (UNIX,X11,NET,NFS,DOS,`Ingres') - 995 *Open Desktop Server Upgrade 1495 - *Open Desktop Development System Upgrade 1495 - ============================================================================== Santa Cruz Operation - XENIX System V/386 Unlim 2-User -------------------------------------------------------------- -------------- UNIX SCO XENIX Operating System 795 595 DEV SCO XENIX Development System 795 - STREAMS SCO Streams Runtime 95 - X11 SCO Xsight Runtime System 395 - NET SCO TCP/IP Runtime System 595 - NFS --- - - DOS SCO VP/ix 895 495 DWB SCO XENIX Text Processing System (old troff) 195 - MAN (documentation included) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Complete SCO XENIX System (UNIX,DEV,DWB) 1695 1395 ============================================================================== Conspicuous in their Absence... - AT&T System V/386 Release 3.2 - Dell System V/386 Release 3.2 - Dell System V/386 Release 4.0 - UHC System V/386 Release 4.0 -- Chip Rosenthal 512-482-8260 | If software look-and-feel can be protected, Unicom Systems Development | then I'd like to claim a copyright upon <chip@chinacat.Unicom.COM> | `Memory fault - core dumped'.

How about soliciting continuous update info, and making it a regular (monthly?) reposting. I think that this is of general continuing interest and value.
