I'm having problems installing SCO V3.2.2 UNIX on an Arche ProFile 386-33. The system is configured with 8MB memory on the motherboard, 80387, Adaptec 1542B SCSI Host adaptor, 2 Segate ST2209N disks, 3.5" floppy, and Trident 8916-2/4 VGA card. All of the basic hardware appears to function correctly. The failure mode manifests itself as an error uncompressing and/or a tar directory checksum error. This will occur usually after processing 5 or more of the installation disks. Sometimes removing and reinserting the disk will allow a retry to succeed. At one point or another in fooling with this I've replaced every component in this system except the mother board. The SCO people suggested trying the install with the 128K cache disabled, which typically allows a few (3-5) more of the disks to be processed. At least with cache disabled I can get a minimal system installed on the hard disks. The diskettes, even the ones it fails on, can be untar'd just fine, so I doubt it`s the distribution. Further conversations with SCO about the problems have suggested that it may not be possible to install UNIX on that system. The SCO support guy said that SCO has some problems with some cache machines and perhaps I could replace that system with a differentone. At this point I'm rather stuck, and what I really want to know is whether other people have encountered similar problems, or if there's anyone that's installed V3.2.2 on an Arche ProFile 386-33. -- =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Jim Levie email: jim@chimera.remtech.com REMTECH Inc Huntsville, Al (or) ...uunet!remtech!chimera!jim The opinions expressed above are just that Ph.
