[comp.unix.sysv386] SCSI tape drives?

darrylo@hpnmdla.HP.COM (Darryl Okahata) (02/22/91)

This has probably been asked a hundred times already, but can
anyone recommend a relatively inexpensive external SCSI cartridge tape
drive (<$1000)? I'm looking for a way to backup my home Esix system.
Also, recommendations on where to *buy* such tape drives would be
appreciated.

Post here or send email. I'll summarize if there's enough
interest.

     Thanks,

I have posted this before. IME Computers was selling Archive 2150S
150Meg SCSI 1/4" streaming cartridge tape drives for $499. These are
bare drives. To make it external, you will need a small case w/ power
supply (about $100). My friend bought one and has had no problems. He
was so satisfied he recently bought two Maxtor LXT-100 3.5" 96M SCSI
hard drives from them for $299/each. They work great, too.

I have no affiliation with IME, Archive or Maxtor except being a friend
of a satisfied customer.

I called them last week and they were out of the Archive 150Meg SCSI tapes.
IME seems to be a surplus place; what products they carry depends on what
they have been able to get recently.

FYI.

p.s. I'm still in search of a good deal on a 150 Meg SCSI tape drive
myself, so if anyone has some good experiences, let's hear them!

Back when I was looking for 150 Meg 1/4" SCSI tape drives (and found
the Archive's at IME), my local Wyle Labs rep had Wangtek 5150ES tape
drives for $675. It seemed like the price was negotiable (to a
point). I was offered $650 if I bought 2 or more. These were also
bare drives for internal mounting. I don't have my Wangtek Reseller
list handy. Check for White Pages for you local Wyle Labs. They are
Authorized Wangtek Resellers.

Again, I have no affiliation with Wangtek or Wyle Labs.
