[net.ham-radio] 220 MHz under attack...

jhs%Mitre-Bedford@sri-unix.UUCP (08/05/84)

Well, what's the RM number? How do we go about mounting a counterattack?
If the ham community hits the FCC with as much effort as we did on no-code,
then perhaps we can save 220.

At the moment there are 2 rule making petitions before the FCC to make the
220 Mhz Ham band commercial business channels.

If you wish to write a letter to the FCC concerning this:

Paragraph 1 - Purpose of the letter
	      Including RM #4829 and/or RM 4831

Paragraph 2 - Technical, well reasoned responses
	      Please, No threats or "deals"

Mail to:	FCC
		2025 M Street N.W.
		Washington, D.C. 20554

(Comments must be to the FCC Prior to August 29, 1984)

RM 4829: Land Mobile Petition wanting to explore the use of 220-225 MHZ.

RM 4831: SSB Technology's Petition to break 220-225 Mhz into 5 Khz
amplitude compared single sideband channels. This is the more
         aggressive of the two petitions.

Possible Technical Arguments:

1. - There is considerable Amateur activity and investment in the band.
The growth in Ham activity shows we do need the band.

2. - Possible interference to and from TV channel 13.

3. - The band could not expand. TV below, Military above.

4. - Would still be an Amateur band in Canada and Mexico, causing
interference along the borders and within 200-300 miles inland.

5. - Cellular techniques on existing bands with existing type equipment
     would be far more efficient.

6. - Even the largest business markets (L.A. and N.Y.) can not even begin
     to occupy 800 mhz.

7. - The suggested technology can be best applied to the existing
     business bands.

If you or your organization wishes to file a formal petition to the FCC to
dismiss without merit RM4829 or RM4831, send the original plus 7 copies to
the FCC at the previous address, plus a copy to the petition originators at:
