[comp.unix.sysv386] Low-cost 386 system

michaely@uhunix1.uhcc.Hawaii.Edu (Michael Yokoyama) (03/16/91)

I would appreciate suggestions on models/vendors to construct a 386
system from scratch. Complete system would have:

     - 386/33 processor - 64K Cache RAM
     - 4MB main RAM - 100 MB or more hard disk
     - 3-1/2 and 5-1/4 high density drives - SuperVGA or VGA card & monitor
     - 1 parallel and 1 serial port - Mouse

Best price so far is Gateway 2000 for complete system. They want 2795
for a 80MB system. Please email replies, I'll summarize and post the results.

Michael,
I tried emailing this to you, but it kept bouncing - so I decided to post.
I have compiled a partial list of vendors from PC Week magazine. If you
know someone that takes PC Week (maybe one of the sys admins or a prof)
then you should get a copy and look in the classified section for a complete
list. If you order from any of these companies then let me know of your
experiences. I am trying to keep the list up to date.

An excellent source of solid motherboards -- although not as inexpensive
as most -- from a guy who is a true expert and who provides excellent support.

If you're really serious about buying a PC-class computer mail order, pick
up a copy of _Computer Shopper_ magazine. They run about 700 pages 11x17
pages each month, and are about 50% ads. While you're poking around in
there, look at Blue Dolphin Computers. I haven't talked to anyone who's
bought from them, but their prices are pretty good. Also Insight, which is
the new CPU-hardware side of Hard Drives International, as good a mail order
company as you will find (IMHO).

I mail ordered the 33Mhz Gateway 2000 system last Friday and they
mentioned they have dropped their prices, the "best buy" system that
was $2795 is now $2595 and the standard 33 Mhz system also dropped by $200.

It really looks like a "great" buy to me.

I've got my sights set on an ALR Business VEISA 101. 33MHz 386,
expandable to 49 Meg (!), 3 ISA and 3 32-bit EISA slots, replaceable
CPU card. (I like expansion options.) I have seen the technical specs,
I know some of the drawbacks (desktop case has few drive bays, CPU cache
is an option, etc.), and confirmation that it'll run ISC Unix. A
bare-bones system w/ 1 Meg is about $1600 from a local store.

I'm probably moving on one of these in the next week or so, with my own
$$ for my own computer, so I'm getting a bit nervous. This is the last
chance I'll have for someone to tell me why this is not a good idea.
