[net.followup] moratorium on apologies

arnold (12/09/82)

I disagree.
	(a) When someone apologizes to the net, the can fend off future
complaints from people who haven't seen the abuse yet.
	(b) People who misuse the net are generally relatively new and
don't know the rules. All a moritorium on apoligies will do
is create yet another rule for them to break, thus causing
the poor new individual (we were all new once, remember) to
get two sets of flames; one for the first abuse and one for
	    apologizing for it.
	(c) Since most seasoned veterans of the net send their complaints
to the misuser, the apology may be the only public mention
that an error has occured, which both reinforces the courtesy
rule that was violated in old timers and warns newcomers to
	    avoid it.

Speaking as one who is new to the net (this site has just started recieving
things via uucp), would someone(s?) care to send me a brief summary (via
Mail) of network news etiquette, so I can avoid having to make any apologies
upon which you might be tempted to declare a moratorium??

By the way, if this is an inappropriate request to send to net.followup,
I apologize!							|-}
