[comp.unix.sysv386] no available ptyps

I'm running Esix 3.2 rev D with X and Motif and just got an office
integration package that runs on dumb terminals just fine, but won't
run from an xterm - it gives the message "no available ptyps".
The port is "officially" for ISC, but the program runs fine on a dumb
term or on the console. Is this a naming difference between
Esix and ISC? I checked /dev and there are lots of ptyps in that
directory. Any pointers? (the program doesn't need X - the script
that calls it just checks to see if it is there and pulls up a
custom colored xterm - that's all it has to do with X.)
