I have owned a SONY 2001 for almost 4 years and am quite pleased.
Don't mistake what it is: it's a transistor portable radio with
a wonderful tuning mechanism. It's not very sensitive or selective
but having a digital frequency input is really neat. And the digital
input works well. It's accurate and stable.

It runs on batteries, but consumption is so high you will need
the AC power pack for anything more than occasional quickies. Batteries
last about 10 - 15 hours. Audio fidelity is pretty good, and FM
performance is quite commendable.

I took the thing along on a 1 year assignment in Italy, and it worked
flawlessly. If I had bothered to set up as a ham during that stint
it would have been an adequate receiver. I tuned in on the bands there
quite often and found it a useable receiver. Mostly I used it for

If you can get it for $100 as mentioned in these columns recently,
I'd say you wouldn't be disappointed.
