According to some of the JA's Ham magagines(such as CQ Ham Radio), FT209
is a super Handie for 2 meter lovers. Unfortunatlly, I haven't got one
yet, but (as far as I know) it has two CPUs and has almost all of the
features that current state-of-the-art technologies can support. I
heard that there are two versions of FT-209s, i.e., one with 3.5-Watts
of output and the other has 5-watts of output power(which has 'H' as a
suffix).

Since we do not have any repeaters on 2 meter band here, we usually get
these HTs without duplex mode. But, this 'litte devil' has a built in
duplex feature with programable shift freqency and programable tone
encoding unit. It also has a tone-squelch unit as one of many options.
Other than that, it has off the shelf receiving coverage of 140-160MHz,
just like the Kenwood TR-2600.

Other notable feature of FT-209 is that it has a 'power save' function,
which stops the entire receiver unit for some amount of time
(programable, forgot the exact value) until it detects any signals
coming in. When this mode is set, average current will be reduced from
around 45mA(normal mode) to 11mA(power save mode), so that your ni-cd
battery would last four times longer. (It won't work when transmitting,
or receiving some signal.) I have a detailed article of this rig at my
home, if any of you on this net are interestead in this 'Super Handie',
I could post 'em out some other time.
