How do I set up X386 1.1 so that I can have xinit "work" from the root console? What happens now is that the X screen comes up, but keyboard input does not work right. I know that if I run X from a virtual console everything works fine, but I would like to run X from the console... I would like to have xdm run at boot up. The same "problem" occurs. I have to switch to a virtual console (ALT-SYSREQ-N) before I can login. Thanks in advance. -- -- Mike Protofanousis msp@pronet.chi.il.us uunet!motcid!protofan

I have recently gotten Thomas Roell's X386 1.1 source distribution, and I am wondering if it is worthwhile to try upgrading from my existing server. I am now running Thomas Roell's old server (from about a year ago) which I ported to my Zenith Z-386 machine running Intel (formerly Bell Technologies) System V/386 Release 3.2, with the original Zenith VGA card. I don't have TCP/IP, and use only STREAMS connections. I am very happy with the old server, but if X386 is significantly better, I might try to set it up when I have time. What are the differences between the two servers? Is the new one significantly better? I am particularly interested in differences in speed, memory usage, and stability (under certain conditions I have problems with lock-ups on the old server, but it doesn't happen often enough to cause me to track down and fix the problem). -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Now it's much too dangerous to stop what | Internet: csmith@cscs.UUCP you've begun when everyone in paradise | UUCP: ...uunet!cscs!csmith carries a gun ... In the FEATURES file one of the points mentioned is the support/use of shared libs. Looking into the at386.cf file a flag is set to YES for SYSV.4 only. Is shared libs on V3.2 out of the question? In the patch directory there is a file xview2.???? . It contains patches to a directory ( xview2 ) in the mit tree. I don't have such a library in the mit source tree. Should I have it and if so where can I obtain it. ( The last links done to the same dir in SetupLinks failed too, because of the missing files ) In the README file a lib libdbm.a is mentioned. What kind of library is it and where can I find the source for it. -- # Peter Brouwer, | Philips Information Systems, # # NET : pb@idca.tds.philips.nl | Department P9000-i Building V2, # # UUCP : ....!mcsun!philapd!pb | P.O.Box 245,7300AE Apeldoorn,The Netherlands# # PHONE:ext [+31] [-0]55 432992,| FAX :ext [+31] [-0]55 432070 #
