I'm looking at networking our Pyramid system and PC's together with AT&T StarGROUP LAN Manager Server running on a 386 PC with SVR4 Unix. This method would seem to give just about the best Unix - MS/DOS interworking that Iv'e heard about - Comments welcome. Only problem is our AT&T distributor want's us to use AT&T SVR4.0 and we already have Intel (soon to be Interactive) SRV4.0, which as far as I can see, should be just about identical - specific drivers excepted. Can we 1 - Run AT&T's LAN manager on another brand of SVR4.0 ? (I don't care if AT&T don't support it) 2 - Obtain LAN Manager for SVR4 Unix from other sources? I'd like to say 'mail me and I'll summarise to the Net', but my international mail access (incomming) is #*&%*&^$, so please don't! _-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ Stephen Pattinson. | Computer Operations Manager | Lewis Construction Company 15 Batman St., West Melbourne 3003., Victoria, Australia, Ph => +61 3 320 4700 A division of the Concrete Constructions Group. | ACSnet => steve@lewis.oz

You would get NO SUPPORT from ANY vendor with such a "hybrid" system. You'd be setting yourself up (not to mention the bad rap the vendors would have when problems CAN'T be resolved on your "one-of-a-kind" system). > > 2 - Obtain LAN Manager for SVR4 Unix from other sources? > Yes, AT&T has licenced a few other companies, NCR (now an AT&T Company), Bull and Olivetti in Europe and of course Pyramid. You need to use the ports of SYS5R4 from each of these vendors for there ports of SG/LMX. AT&T's SG/LMX is now the "offical" LMX port (joint AT&T/Microsoft announce- ment a few weeks ago). All current LMX vendors will be migrating to the AT&T base code - including HP (the "other" LMX). This will result in there being only one base LMX port - AT&T's. -- John Robert Breeden, jbreeden@netcom.com, apple!netcom!jbreeden, ATTMAIL:!jbreeden ------------------------------------------------------------------- "The nice thing about standards is that you have so many to choose from. I'm expecting V3 from Interactive this week. StarGROUP LAN Manager seems to work just fine. Note: AT&T might be somewhat reluctant to supporting 3.4 on Intel/Interactive, but they still support it. > > 2 - Obtain LAN Manager for SVR4 Unix from other sources? In the US, AT&T is encouraging most end users to purchase AT&T products from AT&T Authorized resellers such as ERI, ARROW, etc. Al Jones acj@cci632

There are too many filenames and subtle differences. The only sure way of finding out is to arrange for a test. Joe D. (Running AT&T's Lan Man/X over their SVR4 with AT&T Ethernet boards, the only ones supported).

On an AT&T computer??? Are you using the 10BASE-T boards?
