x From the "Radio Communications Report", September 10, 1984: FCC to Allow Access to Data Base WASHINGTON - The FCC has voted to allow the public direct remote access to its computer data bases, with private land mobile and general mobile radio services' files expected to be the first on line. The Agency's Aug. 8 ruling (Gen. Docket 83-483) comes in response to a proposal filed by the Association of Federal Communications Consulting Engineers (AFCEE), which ori- ginally sought direct remote access to FCC licensing infor- mation. While FCC files are presently available in compu- terized form on a restricted basis from the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Technical Information Service, there is no direct access to the data.......... .....the NTIS would act as account manager for a third party contractor without physically handling the files in the direct access mode.... .......The FCC noted that files from private land mobile and general mobile radio services are structured to permit timely offloading and updating of this information to the third-party computer. Donald Enty, chief of FCC Managing Director's Planning and Analysis Division, said he expects the FCC to have the sys- tem commercially operational in June, 1985. -- =============================================================================== Bob Parnass, Bell Telephone Laboratories - ihnp4!ihu1h!parnass - (312)979-5414
