[comp.unix.sysv386] Anyone using ESIX V.4?

jerry@polygen.uucp (Jerry Shekhel) (06/15/91)

Hello. Is anyone using ESIX System V.4? If so, I would really like to
hear your comments about the product, especially problems, bugs, etc.
Does ESIX X11R4 have a 256-color server that works with the ET4000 VGA
chipset? The $1K price for a 2-user development system is pretty low,
even though Dell is still better (ESIX Motif and Open Look are extra),
but at least you don't need a 150MB tape drive (why are those so d*mn
expensive?)

Thanks in advance.

But Dell also comes with DOS Merge - does ESIX (for 995/1295) price?

OK, ESIX folks, can you answer this one: will a DOS emulator (a la
DOS Merge or ISC VP/ix) *ever* be available for ESIX? This may be one
of the sticking points here, because a number of people want to run
DOS software at our site.{

They're available now. VP/ix from ISC works on ESIX. AT&T Simultask
works on ESIX.

I've used ESIX 3.2 D and now ESIX V4 with a copy of Interactive's VP/ix. ESIX has the hooks in their kernel for both VP/ix and DosMerge. I've even written my own IEM (Installable Emulation Module) that I link into VP/ix to allow DOS programs to access a MIDI card that's installed in my system.

Not a problem.

Ok, so VP/ix from ISC works (with their SVR4?) - but a DOS emulator package
doesn't come with ESIX in their bundled price?

You mean ISC bundles in VP/ix with their base package? Anyone at ISC want
to confirm this? It certainly used to be extra.

Do they work on ESIX SYSVR4?

Dell ships DOS Merge with their package for 1295 (unlimited users) - and
ISC included VPix with the 3.2 package I purchased
