[comp.unix.sysv386] Multi-User Board

spyen@netcom.COM (Shyh-Pei Yen) (06/26/91)

I asked a question a while ago about available choices of Multi-User boards.
I bought the board some time later, but I don't get time to feed the net with
my experience until recently. I think some of you might be interested of my
final decision and the result of using it.

After I posted the question to the net, I received several replies. My summary
is DigiBoard is way too expensive and the price doesn't justify the board's
function, which is similar to all other intelligent multi-user boards. And
look at the reply from the net about some horrible stories (like MaxSpeed's)
really make me hesitate to make any decision. Finally I decided to go for
Cheetah board, which is recommended by my friend. For one thing that make me
feel comfortable is it works with my friend's computer and my friend hasn't
had any problem with it (that's why he recommended it).

I bought one board and the installation went through pretty smooth. I have
a 386 33MHz computer running SCO Open Desktop. The installation just use
ODT's 'custom' to install the driver, then use 'enable' to activate the
ports. I don't have any problem with that. I am sure even an average user
can use the 'custom' to do the installation with no or a little help from
an experienced user. After the installation, I hooked several modems and
several terminals. So far, I don't have major problem with it and all the
minor problems are related to my lack of enough knowledge of UNIX system
and should not blame it to the board.

So, basically I am satisfied with the Cheetah board I bought. And I feel
very lucky that I don't have to encounter the horrible stories like some
other people. Because I don't have other boards for comparison, so I can't
give you any information about its performance. But if you are in the
market for multi-user boards, then you can consider this as a choice.

I don't have the technical specification sheet handy. Basically, it is a
intelligent 16-port board with 80186 processor. I do have their telephone
number, so if you needs more information, just give them a call:

    Allty systems, Inc.
    (408)773-0570

They have a fax number too, but I don't have it right now. I will post a
follow-up tomorrow with more technical information and their FAX number.

Just another regular disclaimer:
I am not affilliated with Allty or DigiBoard or MaxSpeed or whatever other
multi-user board companies. I am just a happy Cheetah board owner.
/*
Hey, I am not going to guarantee I will not affilliated with any of the
above companies in the future. Who knows, I might end up work for them :).
