[comp.unix.sysv386] ISC 2.2.1, Exabyte + IDE disk

indermau@cs.umn.edu (Kurt Indermaur) (06/29/91)

I've been trying for the last two weeks or so to get the following
configuration working with ISC 2.2.1. The tech support people haven't been
much help, so once again I turn to the net....

What I've got:

ISC 2.2.1
25 MHz 80486 PC Clone
IDE controller + 120 Meg Microscience 7100-20 drive
Adaptec 1542B
Exabyte 8200 tape drive

What happens:
The system starts to boot up from the hard disk, resets the tape drive (the
tape seems to be retensioning, or something), and then hangs. (the LED on the
Adaptec controller remains lit while the system hangs)

What I've tried:
I've reconfigured the HPDD so it knows about the SCSI Exabyte tape drive.
I've changed the DMA from 6 to 5 in /etc/conf/kconfig.d/space.tape.gen
I've changed the tape drive's SCSI id/address from 0 to 4
I've enabled/disabled the BIOS on the Adaptec controller.

At this point I'm willing to try just about anything to fix this problem
(e.g., a SCSI disk drive may arrive shortly), so any ideas are welcome.
Mail or post as you see fit.

P.S. Is there any way to get around the maximum ULIMIT of 12288 that I've
run into in ISC's kconfig? (I need to be able to handle files up to
about 10Meg in size, and it would be nice to be able to do it as a
     user other than root).

See the FAQ for this group. (send email if you don't have it).

I guess these are the views of VTI - since it is my consulting company.

Sorry, I can't help you about the disk problem, but I think I can steer
you in the right direction about your ulimit problem. Changing ulimit on
ISC requires two changes: one in the normal location (ie, sdevices or mdevices
I can't offhand remember which) PLUS a file called /etc/default/login.
Unfortunately, I dont have my system conveniently near as I'm typing this.
I believe there's a file in /etc with the letters "login" somewhere in the
file name. It defines various login type limitations such as whether or
not root can log on from another location other than the console. BTW,
this IS documented in the system guide manual. Reference page 63 (section
1.4.5) of the Version 2.2.1 Release Notes.

Good luck,
