[comp.unix.msdos] Dos in ODT ?

ill@uni-paderborn.de (Markus Illenseer) (09/07/90)

Hi there ! I am using ODT from SCO (Open Desktop, X-Win like).
I saw on CeBIT (Biggest show for Computers in Europe) that it is possible
to run MS-DOS in a Window. But I only saw text (say ASCII). Is it also possible
to run Grafix ? Would be great !
Any Idea ? Anybody heard about this ?

Mail me via E-Mail.
CU, Markus.

PS. Is this the right NewsGroup for asking this ?

I would say that it depends on the particular DOS-under-unix product
that you are using. Under VP/ix (ISC 2.0.2) I have seen Lotus 1-2-3 run
on a VGA card and do "everything", including the graphics.

Actually, it was also possible to run it from the dial-in, but the
graphics don't come out right, but the spreadsheet is useable.

No, you can't. As soon as the program tries to mess with the video
graphics, Merge will stop and ask you to switch to full screen.

Since the reason to test out other than vga/ega modes has not presented
itself, my assumption was that ODT-DOS only does this with applications
running/requiring vga/ega. And, I would, again, assume that if Grafix
runs in cga or herc mode, then it would be possible. Correct me if my
assumption is out to lunch.

Wonder if you have noticed that when a dos application (something like
qbasic) is in a window the mouse events are not interpreted but when you
zoom the application, the mouse events become interpreted?

The latest version of Merge, 2.0, comes with a dos X window which is supposed
to handle CGA grafiks in the window. You must however "zoom" EGA and VGA app.

Well, you can, but only in a limited fashion. If you run dos
from an xterm like this:

dos +acga <cga_graphics_program>

you get a fixed sized dos window that shows CGA graphics. This
feature is available on the ODT display (console) and (I think) any PC
running the Locus PC Xsight server.

You can make it foolproof, but you can't make it damnfoolproof.

Yes - cga, and herc grafix works in a window but ega/vga grafix
must be zoomed to full screen.

You can re-direct the mouse events to a DOS window if you "Focus". With
the DOS window active: Press ALT-D to bring up the "DOS Menu" and click on
the "Focus" button. Now your mouse events go the the DOS window. To give
the mouse back to X: bring up the "DOS Menu" and click on "Unfocus".
This way you can share the mouse between the DOS clients and X.

Right. Thanks. It's right there on the menu and in the docs. So much
for my thought process on that one.
