[comp.unix.msdos] DOS Word Perfect 5.? and MKS vi under VP/ix

lubkin@cs.rochester.edu (Saul Lubkin) (10/08/90)

I've noticed a few notes about problems using DOS Word Perfect 5.* running
under VP/ix on Unix/386 systems.

I'm the person who wrote the long article about how to do this, in Computer
Shopper. I thought I'd update those interested.

(1) VP/ix version 1.2 -- the latest version that comes with ISC Unix 2.2 --
has completely solved all of the problems. DOS WP5.[01] now works perfectly,
with no special setup requirements, under VP/ix1.2

(2) Unfortunately, I would guess that many vendors are still bundling the
previous version, VP/ix 1.1, or earlier. (The ISC version can be expected
to be ahead, since ISC and Phoenix make VP/ix). If you have an earlier
version, then it is possible -- but difficult -- to set up DOS WP5.* so that
it will work correctly. Read my two articles in Computer Shopper.

Note: Basically, the problem is, that the WP system files (for releases of
VP/ix before 1.2) must be on an honest DOS filesystem, directly attached
under VP/ix. See the articles in Computer Shopper for a way to do this,
without having to give exclusive access to some needed resource -- like
the VP/ix "C:" drive, or a DOS partition.

P.S. WP5.* works fine under DOS Merge, all versions.

P.P.S. The problem with MKS vi running under VP/ix, resulting in DOS files
editied with MKS vi not being properly truncated, is a bug in VP/ix, that
hasn't been fixed with release 1.2. MKS says that they may eventually code
around this bug, for those who wish to use the product under VP/ix.
