Hi! I'm used to have the utilities "top" and "sps" running on my machines. Now I have a SPARCstation 1+ with SunOS4.1. Unfortunately neither top nor sps are working under 4.1. Has anybody patched sps or top? Does anybody know where I can get diffs or sources? I expect they run fine on SPARC as well. The first entry of the Changes file is: Tue Aug 9 1988 - wnl (2.5) Added changes to make top work under version 4.0 of the Sun operating system. Changes were provided by Scott Alexander of the University of Pennsylvania. Thanks! Compile with "-Dsunos4" to get them. Virtual memory statistics are not readily accessible under 4.0, so they don't show up in the output. Hi! A few days ago I asked for "sps" and "top" for SunOS4.1. I received a lot of replies; most of them asked me to post the result of my ar- ticle because they are looking for the patches as well. So here is what I can say now. There are no problems with "top". Just recompile it under SunOS4.1. (Yes, I did it before I asked - but the older version was the first in the path :-{ ) SPS is a replacement for ps(1). It is much faster and the output looks better. It compiles without errors under SunOS4.1, but it doesn't run because it can't find some symbols in the kernel (_inode, _streams, _streamsNSTREAMS). If someone has patched the sources, please let me know. so long ----------------------------------------------------------------- Richard Czech czech@gmdzi.gmd.de GMD-E.I.S. czech@gmdzi.UUCP D-5205 St. Augustin 1 (+49) 2241 14 2841 (West) Germany -----------------------------------------------------------------

I have seen three different patch sets (one of them by me.) Those who
have the various versions: whaddaya say we try to merge them. At
least that'll spread the blame if it blows up on someone :-)

Hi! After my last posting I received a mail from Kim Hoeglund (shotokan@diku.dk), who told me that a patch for sps under SunOS 4.1 was posted in comp.sources.bugs. (THANK YOU) The patch didn't fit for the sps sources I had. But on titan.rice.edu (128.42.1.30) are the matching sources of sps. So now I finally have a running sps under SunOS 4.1! If someone needs the patch I can send it, but only if there aren't hundreds of interested people. It's about 10k long. Maybe I should post it? best regards ----------------------------------------------------------------- Richard Czech czech@gmdzi.gmd.de GMD-E.I.S. czech@gmdzi.UUCP D-5205 St. Augustin 1 (+49) 2241 14 2841 West Germany (it still is _West_ Germany, but only for one week) -----------------------------------------------------------------

Now this article should end the postings to this topic. As earlier mentioned, top only needs to be recompiled under SunOS 4.1. If you don't have top you can get the sources per anonymous ftp. I know that it's available from titan.rice.edu (128.42.1.30) and in Europe from elbereth.informatik.uni-dortmund.de (129.217.4.2). For sps you need a patch to run under 4.1. The patch I received does not match witch the sources I took from elbereth. The matching sources are on titan. I've put the patch into the incoming directory on titan. The name is incoming/sps.patch.sunos.4.1. The patched version still claims that some symbols can`t be found in the kernel. This seems to be a minor problem. Once installed sps works fine. I hope with this information everyone who is interested in one of these programs can get a running version now. with regards ----------------------------------------------------------------- Richard Czech czech@gmdzi.gmd.de GMD-E.I.S. czech@gmdzi.UUCP D-5205 St. Augustin 1 (+49) 2241 14 2841 Germany -----------------------------------------------------------------
