I am running a Unix V.2 system with 2 MB onboard memory. Additional memory can be added on the VME bus. If I add kernel memory on the VME bus the performance suffers, because processes are running in slow VME memory. So I added VME memory in standaard space not seen by the kernel at startup and use it for buffer cache and a ram disk. Now how are things organized in V.3? I noted that you can have gaps in memory and should specify your memory in the configuration file. The manual says that memory should be listed in speed order, fastest first. Is this because System V.3 is doing something intelligent with placement of kernel data structures en the buffer cache? Jim van Keulen dept. CS & M Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam
