[comp.unix.misc] ATT SVR4 misc.questions

bolton@cg-atla.UUCP (Lee Bolton) (01/04/91)

	Hello;

A few miscellaneous queries and pleas:
I thought of making separate postings, but this is probably less painful.

The system is ATT SVR4 on a 386/16 clone, 6M ram, CGA.

I want to upgrade my disk controller and disks. from MFM with
2:1 interleave to RLL with 1:1. How do I do that? I haven't bought
the controller yet, and when I do, it'll likely be used. So,
any recommendations and/or warnings would help a lot.
BTW, Setup formatted the drives at 3:1. I have yet to figure out why.

This machine has OLD roms (Phoenix v1.10 B2) which don't have a
drive table entry to match my disk, So I can't use the top 40meg.
This sucks. First, does anyone know if there is an rom upgrade available
that allows user defined drive table entries to get >>1024 cylinders?
The last time I tried calling Micronics, I stayed on hold MUCH longer
than I'm gonna admit to in public. I donwanna do that again soon.
I have a vague recollection of a recent posting warning that some
SVR4s have drivers that can't handle big disks. Is this true of
ATT sysV/386? If so, anybody got a hack for this?

I need a way to set the system default colors on the console.
I don't mean ansi sequences, I mean right to the drivers. I read
the man page on /dev/display in the system administrators reference
and it mentions some ioctls, but it's hard to believe that nobody's
hacked this already. If you haven't got code, hints would still be
appreciated. I've got quite a bit of BSDish code I want to bring up,
so I'd rather use termcap if possible, But don't let that stop you.
If you have a terminfo based solution ,or anything else, I'll take it.

I need a terminfo description for a star NX1000 color printer.
Failing that, Any Epson Compatible 9 pin will do.

I also have need of a not-X, mouse driven, draw/paint package that
will write TIFF format files and run on a CGA screen. Hopeless You say?
	Well... I tried.

If you have an idea about setting the colors, or if you feel like
discoursing about ST506 drives under SVR4, you might wanna think
about posting it. For the rest, Email please.

If you got this far, Thanks for your time.
