[comp.unix.misc] USENET info wanted.

gill@boris.mscs.mu.edu (Vijay Gill) (01/24/91)

I am writing a paper on the USENET and related nets (generic NET).
The following questions need to be answered.

1. How did the net come about. (I knew that there were two programmers
who wanted to exchange information and so wrote the first UUCP
like programs. What I want are specific dates and names if at
	all possible.)
2. What use is the Net.
3. Approximately how many people read the Net (all groups combined).
4. How many machines get the newsfeed distribution.
5. How does the net reflect upon the computer culture.
6. UUNET handles about 1.7 GigaBytes a day. Confirm if possible.
7. How do you use the net (Does it help in your work, or do you use
it as a source of relaxation.)
8. (For sysadmin's and system manglers :-) ) Sending and carrying
news is expensive. Why do you do it.

Please respond direct via E-MAIL to gill@boris.mscs.mu.edu. I will
post the paper in plain-ascii on the net as soon as I get it done.
I have the electronic version of the Hackers Dictionary Circa 1990,
edited by Eric S. Raymond. All helpful replies will be acknowledged
and relevant parts cited in the paper.
I know that the answers to these questions are known to almost all
net.gods, net.aspiring-to-be-gods, Real (tm) Programmers, and demi-gods.
As I cannot yet claim any of the above labels, so will people who have
achieved net.status please reply. Once again, E-MAIL, don't post as I
am sure most of the people already know the answers.

Mathematicians do it inductively. |2307gillv@vmsf.csd.mu.edu
