DTMF, as a term, could apply to both the long distance trunk control codes as well as your local Touch-Tone (tm) telephone. But I seem to remember seeing a document that called the long distance tones something else, and relegated DTMF to the generic term. It was in a magazine called Telephone Electronics Line or TEL for short. It was a shortlived publication in the early 70's. Probably had something to due with the fact that they published an article comparing the "new" proposed digital control system to the DTMF control system, complete with all frequencies, digital codes, and operator control codes. mikey at trsvax
