The X Journal is a new bimonthly publication serving the X Window System community; the first issue will be September/October 1991. The X Journal will provide a forum for in-depth discussion of a variety of topics related to X including: Xlib and Xt programming issues, discussion of alternative toolkits and language interfaces, overviews of upcoming releases from The X Consortium, graphics programming with X, extensions to X, X-related software engineering issues, X system administration, user interface design issues, book and conference reviews, interviews, and other topics. So far, the response to this publication from the X community has been very positive. It seems that there are many of us who are interested in reading more about the above issues, what other individuals/companies are doing with X, X programming tips, and so on. If you're coming to Xhibition or USENIX, stop by the publisher's booth and meet the publishing staff and the editor. If you can't make it to either conference and have comments or questions about any aspect of the publication, you can call, write, fax, or email the editor and/or publisher as outlined below. If you'd like to discuss writing an article or column for The X Journal, please contact the editor. In the earlier announcement for The X Journal, I provided addresses and phone numbers for the editor and publisher. Many of you (actually more than many) have inquired about the publication. Most questions have been related to (1) how to submit an article and (2) how to subscribe. At this point, I'd like to provide follow-up information that you can save for future reference. If you would like to discuss contributing an article, reviewing a book on X, doing a software review, etc., please contact the editor: > Jerry Smith > The X Journal > Iris Computing Labs > 2439 Wood Sorrell > Signal Mountain, TN 37377 USA > Phone: 615 - 886 - 3429 (Eastern Time) > Fax: 615 - 886 - 4106 > Email: uunet!spectro!jsmith If you represent a public or university library, a corporation that maintains a library, or a similar organization, and would like to know how to get an evaluation copy for consideration by your periodical committee, please contact the publisher directly: > The X Journal > SIGS Publications > 588 Broadway > Suite 604 > New York, NY 10012 USA > Phone: 212 - 274 - 0640 > Fax: 212 - 274 - 0646 As for subscriptions, SIGS Publications will make subscription forms available in the usual manner, namely, using inserts in other publi- cations, direct mailing, distribution at trade shows, and so on. Because so many people are requesting subscription information NOW, I'm including a subscription form that you can cut, print, and mail "to the appropriate authorities." For network conservation, this subscription form should be a one-time posting, so please save it if you anticipate subscribing. Please do NOT submit this form (or your money) to the editor! This publication is not to be confused with the X Journal that O'Reilly & Associates announced at the January X Conference. We were also planning on calling it "The X Journal" but maybe we'll call it "The X Window System Journal" instead. We'll be making some further announcements about this journal shortly. We'll also be at Xhibition if you want to talk to us about it. -- Tim O'Reilly @ O'Reilly & Associates, Inc.
