[net.followup] Compare VMS and Unix

mckeeman (01/04/83)

We have a single VAX and run both Unix and VMS on a schedule that changes
fairly often. It is, of course, a pain in the keyboard. We attempt to
minimize the difficulties by:
1. running the same editors in both environments (vi and emacs)
2. allowing read-only file transfers from the "other side"
We may duplicate other facilities also when time, energy and opportunity permit.
The worst problem is not being in continuous contact with unix mail. It is
both our internal communication medium and connection to the outside world.
I think we are most likely to "solve" this problem by moving the mail service
to our Wang VS100 and treating the VAX as just one more link in usenet. But
that would be a fair amount of work which we may or may not choose to do. I
would be interested in other "solutions" you folks out there might have.
