[net.ham-radio] Help? Electronics Self-Taught?

My son, who is a Junior in CS at a school not on the net, is interested
in learning electronics without going back to ground zero with
engineering courses. He has asked me to recommend a/some book/s
in the hope he could pick things up for himself.
I have always felt that the presentation of basics in "The Radio
Amateur's Handbook" was one of the best I had ever seen. It has,
however, been over 10 years since I last saw one and they are temporarily
out of stock everywhere local pending a new issue.
Do you folks agree with me?
Would you recommend something else as a starter?
Heathkit has a lot of very expensive courses. Anyone recommend any of
them in this case?
I will be happy to summarize replies if volume and interest so indicate.
Many thanks in advance.

It's the thought,if any, that counts. Dick Grantges hound!rfgZ

Speaking of learning electronics, do not ever recommend the military
for this task. Recent graduates have what is known as the ability
to change cards. Back in the sixty's when I went through there was
substance but now only attempts to save money. That is, let the
gomer pull the card and throw it in the trash or send it back to the
manufacturer. I point this out as it used to be a desireable path.
