A month or so ago I called Al Gore's Senate office in Washington, asking for information about the NREN project, an initiative made by IBM, MCI, and Merit, to create a new network to supplement the existing NSFNet. Some people (including myself) were afraid that this translated into a network where IBM & MCI monopolized it with their equipment (I'll keep my comments to myself about how NSFNet's up right now) and the "Freedom" of today would be somehow lost. I received a packet a couple of weeks ago (I finally got to look at it today) that Michael Nelson (PhD, Professional Staff Member of the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation) put together in response to my inquiry. It includes a copy of the High Performance Computing Act of 1990 (S. 1067), some Xeroxes(tm :) ) of the presentation of it by Senator Gore from the Congressional Record, and a copy of an article from the Washington Post. I have to applaud Senator Gore's office (and Mr Nelson) for their quick and very admirable response to my simple request for "information on Sentator Gore's networking bill". From what I can see, they aren't trying to suppress any info about it. Just thought I'd drop this into the bucket. -- Brendan Kehoe - Widener Sun Network Manager - brendan@cs.widener.edu Widener University in Chester PA A Bloody Sun-vs-Dec War Zone Top Ten Surprises in Rocky V -- Number 5, Loveable Character Chewbacca Dies
