[net.ham-radio] R/C Mix and Match

paull@hplabs.UUCP (Rob KA6SFV) (10/26/84)

Hi,fellow ham (or other) r/c nuts.

Currently I am using an Airtronics XL6-FM system. (TX,RX & servos)
What I'd like to know is if anyone has mixed and matched other manufacturers
equipment. E.G., Airtronics with Futaba or Kraft or Ace or ??? What I'd
like to do is have separate reciever/battery systems in each model to avoid
pulling things apart too many times.

Airtronics separate receivers seem to be unavailable right now, but Futaba
is in ample supply. Since most of the modern systems use the Signetics
encoder/decoder chips I thought I might get a simple 2 channel receiver and
use it with the 6 channel transmitter (Thus saving lots-a-bux).

                                        TNX 73 Rob Paull (KA6SFV)

ps: My source for most R/C stuff is Sheldons in San Jose, CA. They seem
to have the largest selection of hardware and software (planes Hi.Hi)

The problem I see with your particular mix and match is that your
base system is FM. Will you be able to get an FM 2 channel receiver?
Seems to me that most companies only provide FM on their higher end
models. I doubt you'd have trouble as long as you get the receiver
tuned to the transmitter.

One thing for you to check on is whether Airtronics makes radios
for hobby shops like Futaba does. Hobby Shack now sells FM versions
of their radio, which I'm sure is a Futaba in a different box. This
would probably be the cheapest route to get a flight pack.

If you do get a 2 channel receiver, open it up and see if it is really
a 6 or 7 channel without the extra connectors. I've heard they do this
so they only have to have one board line in manufacturing.

Yes, it is possible to mix systems. A highly proven lowcost rcvr, two
channel expandable to 4 channel is available from Tech RC (formerly
Royal Electronics) in Denver 303-757-4082. You can get it in kit form
and it is available in the various channels. They also have good buys
on servos and servo kits.

Yes I am a ham (W9LXP) and an R/C nut also. In trying to find a notes
net to discuss this sort of thing, it has been pointed out that net.rec
is the likely place, why don't we continue this discussion there?
