... this very thing: there are many people that do not believe that
people have the right to live as they want. If we "all" agreed that
privacy and anonymity were desireable things, the details of Caller
ID would be simply implementation, wouldn't it? 
 
This process is *exactly* my biggest complaint -- John Gilmore can
attest to this -- the lack of awareness, or even acknowledgement,
that *this* is the level where our problems lie. They have diddly 
squat to do with the technologies. It's simply a layer like a
shared psychosis, confusing symbols and meaning.
 
It's a very fundamental problem. I should be able to live without
surveillance. Period. The usual exceptions, immediate life threats
etc. Those are extraneous -- unless you have law'n'order virus, in
which case *everything* is suspect.
