I'm calling these the "Atlanta Hackers" to distinguish them from the recently discussed University of Georgia case. There was extensive coverage in Friday's (June 14) Atlanta Journal. Main points: 12 computers and 1,400 diskettes were confiscated from four suburban Atlanta teenagers Wednesday. The youths -- two 15 yrs old and two 17 yrs old -- have not yet been charged or identified publicly. In an apparently related case 6 months ago, 4 Gwinnett County teens were linked to an international network of hackers... ...main harm done was theft of a huge amount of telephone and telecommunications services... ...main victims were Bellsouth, Emory University, Georgia Tech, and TV station WXIA... ...related to various incidents stretching over about 1 year. ----------- That's all I know. One issue we should jump on is that as much as possible of the equipment should be returned to the owners as quickly as possible. No punishment without conviction. Surely all the evidence can be obtained by copying the disks, which shouldn't take too long. -- ------------------------------------------------------- Michael A.
